There is something about gently caressing a baby and watching it respond with coos and gurgling smiles. However, there is much more to baby massages than mere pleasure. Massages are believed to help underweight babies gain needed pounds, strengthen weak immune systems, alleviate the pain of colic and other health related benefits.
Newborns should be massaged in between feedings, giving them time to absorb the benefits before and after they eat. Massages with older babies generally use the rule of activity which says that you should wait one hour after meals before applying.
Following are some tips in order to give a baby massage correctly:
Baby Massage Preparation
In order to give a correct massage to an infant, you should first prepare by ensuring a few things. First, make sure that the atmosphere in which you are massaging is pleasant for the baby. Since the baby will not have on clothing, heat the room to a comfortable temperature. Also, make sure that no bright lights are shining directly in the baby’s eyes by closing shades to reduce sunlight during the day and using table lamps instead of overhead lights during the night.
A baby is very tender. Therefore, remove all jewelry and trim any sharp nails that can scratch the baby. Then, just prior to commencing the massage, wash your hands thoroughly with a mild soap.
