Begin by applying a mild baby oil or cream on the baby’s skin, but avoiding the face. This acts as a skin softener and helps your hands to glide effortlessly over the baby.
Next, start massaging the child from either the feet or the head. When massaging, apply a light but firm pressure. However, when working around the head, do not massage the temples or the soft spots that are located at the top of the head as these areas are still developing. Make small, circular motions using your fingertips over the baby’s forehead, scalp and face, and massage its earlobes between your thumb and finger.
Work your way down the baby’s body with the same circular motions. However, avoid tickling the baby as this can cause it to dislike massages. Take care when massaging joint areas. Gently squeeze arm and leg muscles and gently press the baby’s fingers and toes between your fingers. Massaging the belly area just beneath the belly button will help to relieve gas pains.
For back massages, lay the baby on its stomach and massage its shoulders and back, avoiding the spine completely.
Many times, a gentle, loving massage will put your baby to sleep. It also provides a wonderful bonding experience that both you and your baby will look forward to on a regular basis.
